Annex IX: Criteria for the Selection of Commodities

The following criteria have been taken from the report on the Ghana country study and supplemented. They may be modified for every specific case. In order to select a commodity or a group of commodities the criteria should be weighted in group work using an appropriate ranking or scoring technique (see section 2.2.3.12 of the main text).

Criteria

• contribution of the commodity to household income


• economic potential for households


• importance as a staple crop and contribution to food security


• contribution to national export revenue


• export potential


• contribution to, or potential for improving income distribution


• technical post-production constraints


• socio-political constraints


• potential for promoting women


• constraints in marketing and infrastructure


• production level and constraints


• contribution to conserving natural resources


• etc.
